HOW TO TELL YOUR PARENTS YOU ARE DATING!!!

One of the things which high school is known for are all of the
couples which seem to pop up. High school is the place where most
people try out their "dating legs" and begin to see the opposite sex
as more than just people with cooties. One of the hardest things you
may have to do is have the discussion with your parents about your
dating life.

Things You'll Need: Get Your parents Comfortable place to sit with no
distractions

#1. Talk to your parents about wanting to have a talk. This works in
two ways. First off, they will not be
surprised that something is
coming if they are against you dating and secondly,
they might think that what
you have to talk to them
about is a lot worse than it
actually is. This may help make the conversation go a bit smoother.

#2. Make a plan about what you are going to say. A script will come in
handy if the conversation begins to go somewhere you don't want it to.
It will also help to keep you from getting angry.

#3. Begin the conversation openly and honestly. Don't go into the
situation trying to assert your independence. Sometimes the best thing
to do is to simply say, "I have been seeing X. We are becoming a
couple."

#4. Let your parents talk. If you give them the respect to listen to
their opinions and not interrupt, there is a good chance they will do
the same for you. Ask them to wait to talk until you are finished.

#5. Stay as mature as possible. Don't use teen lingo or sarcasm if the
conversation isn't going well. Keep the language adult in nature like
you would use in a job interview.

#6. Leave the conversation if it is becoming too heated.
Don't get up and walk out,
but ask your parents to reconvene at a different time after everyone
has calmed down. Regroup and try it again.

TIPS & WARNINGS!

¤ Ask your parents questions about their dating life and try to
understand where they might be coming from
if they are against you dating. Keep the conversation going and be
interested in what they have to say.

¤ Don't storm out, yell or get indignant. You may be tempted to do so
out of frustration, but that will not help the conversation at all.
